Museum and Collection Network of the Bundeswehr

A network for military-historical cooperation within the Bundeswehr

Military history in all its diversity

The Museum and Collection Network of the Bundeswehr (MSVBw) brings together over 100 military history collections and regional exhibitions under the umbrella of the *Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr*Bundeswehr Centre of Military History and Social Sciences (ZMSBw). Organizationally anchored in the Education Division, it serves as a central structure for preserving and communicating military-historical knowledge.

From local study collections to internationally active exhibition institutions, the participating bodies reflect the diversity of the Bundeswehr and their history — both in the different branches and service arms represented and in the regions in which the collections are located.

Lead museum in the MSVBw

The Military History Museum (MHMBw) in Dresden serves as the lead museum of the MSVBw and is one of the most significant history museums in Europe. Here, professional museum standards and guidelines for the network are developed. The museum provides substantial support in curatorial, personnel and organizational matters.

The MHMBw thus serves as the central point of contact for collections across Germany. In this context, it provides practical support to other members of the MSVBw in all matters relating to day-to-day collection management. It also supports other members in further developing and professionalizing their work by offering workshops, seminars and excursions.

Support and professional development

Excursions to other museums form an integral part of the professional development programme. They open up new perspectives for participants and introducing them to inspiring concepts from other institutions. In addition, the contact point provides targeted on-site support – from the acquisition of objects and organizational challenges to the strategic development of collections.
