Personal development, reflection, responsibility and dialogue with history

Our Historical and Political Education Team offers a wide range of programmes for personnel in the Bundeswehr tailored to individual interests.

Programmes range from guided tours of current exhibitions to one-day seminars and three-day workshops. The focus is on strengthening participants’ ability to engage critically with German (military) history, the traditions of the Bundeswehr and its sense of military identity.

The aim is to foster active commitment to the liberal democratic constitutional order as an integral part of the professional role of Bundeswehr personnel.

Brothers turned enemies: The Bundeswehr and the NVA until 1990

In divided Germany, the Bundeswehr and the NVA stood in opposition to one another. The Bundeswehr’s guiding principle of the ‘citizen in uniform’ differed greatly from the ‘socialist soldier personality’ in East Germany. The tour showcases objects from everyday life in the barracks and traces a path from rearmament and the nuclear threat, through the peace movement and the fall of the Wall, to the Army of Unity.

The tour explores how such meaning has been understood in different historical contexts – from family obligations and national consciousness to ideological conviction, material incentives and the belief in serving a democratic state.
