Projects and collaborations

National and international partnerships, projects and collaborations of the Military History Museum

International collaborations

In collaboration with the Bavarian Army Museum in Ingolstadt, the Military History Museum established a working group of German-speaking military history museums and collections from Germany, Austria and Switzerland in 2023. Since then, the working group has met once a year at different locations. These meetings serve as a forum for staff from the participating institutions to exchange ideas at a professional level. They enable direct exchange, coordination of exhibition and research projects, and closer alignment of collection activities.

The Military History Museum is also a member of national and international museum associations. These include the German Museum Association and the International Council of Museums (ICOM), as well as its specialist committee for museums and collections of arms and military history ICOMAM (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Arms and Military History).

Collaboration with regional and international museums

The museum also maintains close contacts with leading national and international military history and history museums, such as the foundation House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Historical Museum, the Military History Museum in Rastatt, the Museum of Military History in Vienna, the Musée de l'Armée in Paris and the Musée Royal de l'Armée (War Heritage Institute) in Brussels, to name just a few. One focus is on relations with related institutions in neighbouring countries.

Cooperation with local and regional museums and collections is equally productive. These include the Dresden State Art Collections, Königstein Fortress, the exhibitions on the 1813 Battle of Leipzig, and, not least, the Halle State Museum of Prehistory and the Lützen 1632 Museum.

Important positions on expert committees

Representatives of the Military History Museum also serve on various expert committees, including the Saxon Cultural Senate, the governing association of the Berlin-Karlshorst Museum, and the advisory boards of the German Tank Museum in Munster, the Point Alpha Memorial and the Belgian War Heritage Institute.

Lectures in Germany and abroad

The Military History Museum fulfils its educational and outreach mission not only at its sites in Dresden, Berlin-Gatow and the New Armoury at Königstein Fortress, but also through lectures delivered at institutions in Germany and abroad. The Military History Museum has been cooperating with the History Didactics Department of the Institute of History at Dresden University of Technology since 2024 in order to establish the museum as an important academic and educational centre of learning.
