A place of knowledge, research and scholarship

A place for questions and answers

The library of the Military History Museum is not only part of the collection, but also a place of research and scholarly exchange. It provides a space for enquiry and discussion relating to the military, society and history.
The principal areas of its holdings are military affairs, military history and military technology. They are complemented by literature on aerospace, museum studies, conservation and restoration, handheld weapons, medals and decorations, uniform studies, photography and art.

Collection

The library’s holdings are extensive. The collection comprises 51,000 volumes of monographs from 1851 to the present day, as well as 1,000 historically valuable books and journals from the 16th century to 1850. It also contains 16,400 service regulations from the Prussian and Saxon armies, through the Reichswehr, Wehrmacht and NVA, to the present-day German Armed Forces. In addition, there are 50 current newspapers and journals, as well as 1,170 newspapers and journals held only in individual issues or partial runs.

OPAC – the electronic catalogue

The OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) has been available since 2001. It enables users to search the holdings systematically and to apply different search strategies. However, it is only accessible to personnel in the Bundeswehr.

Using the library – who has access?

The library is primarily open to members of the museum and the German Armed Forces. Visitors who are not in the German Armed Forces may use the library by registering in advance by telephone or in writing, as the number of places in the reading room is limited.
Access to the online catalogue is restricted. To ensure that the relevant literature can be made available, it is helpful to specify the desired topic when registering. Copying facilities are available; charges are based on the current fee schedule.
