Strength in formation

Formations have played a central role throughout military history. This section of the themed tour explores military formations and their significance, both historically and for the individuals who become part of them.

New weapons and tactics

Advances in weapon technology and the development of new combat tactics also changed the demands placed on formations entering the battlefield. In the 19th century, closed formations became obsolete. The experiences of the First World War ultimately led to a redefinition of the concept of formation.
