From the late Middle Ages to the early 20th century (ground floor)
This section of the chronological exhibition charts German and European military history up to the First World War, beginning in the 14th century.
During this period, known as the Late Middle Ages, armoured horsemen dominated the battlefields of central Europe. For many people, these noble warriors and the ideal of chivalry still shape their image of the Middle Ages today.
However, with the increasing use of missile weapons in the 15th century, their military supremacy began to decline. Muskets and artillery led to the emergence of professional armies and brought about a fundamental transformation in warfare in the early modern period.
