The emergence of the modern German Armed Forces

From two German armies to an army on international missions

From the post-war period and the divided world of the Cold War to reunification and the Bundeswehr’s missions abroad, this section of the chronological exhibition traces key moments in recent German history.

It addresses the Allied occupation of Germany and the division, establishment and development of two German armies that faced each other across the inner-German border during a period of uneasy peace.

After reunification, new security challenges emerged. As a result, the Bundeswehr evolved into a force engaged in operations abroad. Deployments in the Balkans and Afghanistan placed heavy demands on German soldiers.

Germany within NATO

In addition to topics such as humanitarian assistance, the arms race and military service, this section also examines relations between the civilian population and the military in both divided and reunified Germany. It also looks at the current role of Germany and its armed forces within NATO.
